Amaryllis is the only genus in the subtribe Amaryllidinae. It is a small genus of flowering bulbs, with two species. The better known of the two, Amaryllis belladonna, is a native of the Western Cape region of South Africa, particularly the rocky southwest area between the Olifants River Valley and Knysna.
Like most flowering bulbs, amaryllis prefer full sun and well-drained soil.
Ensure the soil stays moist at all times and drains well.
Amaryllis fertilizer requirements are not particularly special; pretty much any slow release or liquid fertilizer that has an N-P-K ratio of 10-10-10. If using a slow release fertilizer, apply every 3-4 months. When using a liquid fertilizer, feed the plant 2-4 times monthly either every week or bi-monthly.
This plant can be toxic to cats and dogs if eaten.
